Some spoiler alerts...but I try not to do a lot.This was a new series to me and so I read the first three books before posting reviews. I do this because I do not feel just a first book in a series is always the best judge. This author started out grabbing me well enough in book 1. I liked Avery. Ramirez was too 'predictable' in everything and their coupling was too predictable. The question is WHY? The author goes out of his way to make her UNLIKABLE". i DID NOT UNDERSTAND THAT. In book 1 you are introduced to her flaws and it seems he is taking the character in the direction of learning from them and recognizing them. BUT by book 2 you realize she is recognizing them, but not taking the right path. WORSE- by book 3 I am sitting here...AS A MOTHER GOING...you do not deserve to have had your daughter even give you another chance. She has time for everyone and everything BUT Rose...a bar, getting drunk, getting laid, but not her kid. WHO SHE VIRTUALLY ABANDONED FOR YEARS...yeah okay. THEN in part blames her daughter??? Then impart OVER intrudes on her daughter????
By book 3 a pattern had emerged...she is pushme-pullyou...she pushes to get people then pulls them away. She has time to go visit a psycho killer who ruined her life, but not time for her daughter. NOT BELIEVABLE.
Another pattern...in book 1 she was constantly proving herself and always better than the guys that had been doing this longer...AND another pattern...she pisses them off..she is off the case but goes on to get in harms way, hurt and solves the case...again in book 2 and again in book 3.
Too much by book 3 made me no longer like her character. WHICH IS SO SAD because the story itself, the murders were interesting.
BUT here is another horrendously flawed detective.
so by reading so many of the books
female detectives all sleep around
female detectives all are lousy wives and mothers and partners
female detectives are all terribly flawed
female detectives can not do their job unless they are all of the above.
REALLY???
Now in checking out for book 4 I find it is a cliffhanger and you have to read book 5 to find out what happens...AND it sounds like the same crap with her and Rose and her and Ramirez so I am done with this author.
Shame because this could have been a good character.
IT IS A SHAME WHEN AUTHORS FEEL THEY HAVE TO BLACKMAIL US INTO THE NEXT BOOK.
and TO PAY 4 and 5 bucks for 172 pages...with so many typos

I can't believe how intense these books are. Once you start one it's like you're as caught up in the insanity as Black or the killer. I'll probably have some very intense dreams.
I absolutely love this series. Waiting for the next one. I love books with mystery suspense and a touch of romance. Highly recommended to mystery junkies.
All of Blake Pierce books that I have read to date have been absolutely fantastic! He keeps you wanting to turn the page to see what is going to happen next.
the usual dramas Avery deals with in EVERY book.
Watch out for the really good action scene almost at the end.
Blake Pierce's books are fantastic. They grab you from the opening lines and keep you reading until the end. Avery Black is an outstanding detective and main character.......I feel like I know her and would like to meet her to talk over a cup of coffee. The way she gets into the minds of the criminals is amazing. The storylines Blake Pierce writes are fast paced, hard gripping and thrilling. He has moved to my list of favorite authors!
I am addicted to Blake Pierce right now. Have read Riley Paige, Mackenzie White, Avery Black and Keri Locke and preordered the next in each of these series. I just like the way he write. Stories believable, character interaction is interesting and the books are easy to read. I usually finish them in one sitting because I just want to know what happens
‘Cause to Hide,’ was a horrifically gripping read!
Detective Avery Black finds her life, once again, taking a backseat to hunting down another serial killer. It is a suspenseful, jarring, and even dangerous case involving an killer who may be an arsonist. Avery and Ramirez are also trying desperately to navigate their way through their partnership and the budding me relationship.
