What is an underground home? Why build one? What's it like to live underground? The answers to these and many other questions await you in this book. Ray Scott, whose own underground home has attracted nationwide interest, tells you from his own firsthand experience everything you need to know to plan, design, and build a modern underground geothermic home. The author describes very precisely the different nature of underground construction and the advantages it offers, then carefully takes you step by step through all the stages of planning and building an underground house. He provides solid, practical answers to any question you might have about codes and regulations, design and land contour, site preparation and selection, designing and building the "shell" (pouring concrete, foundation, floors, walls, and ceiling), roof design, ventilation, waterproofing, backfilling and grading, making ceilings, utility installation, rough-in woodworking, putting in domes and skylights, inside finishing and alternate sources of energy (Scott's 3,600 sq. ft. home is heated entirely with a wood stove). Since underground living is different in some ways, you'll also learn what to expect after moving in. If you're planning to either buy or build a new home, this book will adequately prepare you for the experience...and guide you in the right direction. Ray Scott is an experienced do-it-yourself home builder with a three-story "tree" house, a houseboat-camper-trailer combination, and his underground home to his credit. He is a registered engineer living in Maryland.

While the author mentions other experience briefly, the book is based on his experiences building his own underground home (after only one year in the ground). I loved the first few chapters, which dealt with the trials of earth sheltered building in a very humorous and encouraging way. He has some inspiring stuff about tackling the dream rather than talking about it. In practical terms he had some good advice that comes with experience, such as being prepared for each days work so you don't waste time/money. Overall, his writing style was better than average for an earth sheltered book. However, most of the rest of the book was very out of date (to be expected since he was a pioneer when he wrote the book 1979). For instance, he didn't bother to orient the house for passive solar gain, he didn't put in any sort of drainage, he didn't use a separate air inlet for the fire place (he used the draw to pull air thru his house, the inlet was the leaky, home-made, skylight), he actually said he was not concerned about ventilation, etc. Codes have changed since the book was written and his solution of putting fire extinguishers in the bedrooms (none of which had egress) would not work today. He mentions the costs of things, and describes them as expensive, but they would be fantastic deals at those prices today ;^)
Overall, still worth the read for anyone contemplating the journey, but don't take his design advice.

How to Build Your Own Underground Home [Student Loose Leaf Facsimile Edition ReImaged from Original for Greater Clarity 2014] Ray G Scott Books Reviews
Good information for building an underground house.
This is a very good book, as I now own two! My mistake as much as the seller for having a modern(stock) photo instead a photo of the actual book, but with that said it was still a very good deal and a good buy! I have no problem buying from this seller again, I will simply ask questions as everyone sould for any purchase. Thanks again, Craig
A good book but after reading it, I decided to not build an underground
house. This book explains exactly what is involved in building such a
home. If you still want to do all the work, go for it.
Not finished reading but this book is very informational.
